Volunteer Firefighter Now Head of the LPD Fire Department!

Kelly first attended SCCC from 1985 to 1987 graduating with an A.S. in engineering. He then transferred to Kansas State University to study Mechanical Engineering. I returned to Liberal in 1988 after a decision to change my area of study. I was employed at KSCB Radio and had worked at KQLA Radio in Manhattan. I was interested in pursuing a career in journalism and more specifically sports broadcasting. While here, I took additional classes at SCCC which enabled me to obtain an A.A. in Business / Management. While working at KSCB I took a position as a volunteer firefighter for the Seward County Fire Department in the summer of 1990. That opened the door to a full time position with the City of Liberal Fire Department as Firefighter / EMT. I was employed by the City on August 1, 1991. In my career I have held the rank of Shift Captain, Deputy Chief, and I have been Fire Chief for 13 years now.

Thank you so much to El Rancho Supermercado for providing five $1000 scholarships to Seward County Community College. Your generosity and support to the community is greatly appreciated! Thank you, again! -- El Rancho Supermercado has donated five, individual $1,000 scholarships to Seward County Community College. The announcement was made at a check presentation ceremony on Monday. SCCC Chief Development Officer Kyle Woodrow was grateful for the supermarket’s donation and its interest in helping those in the community with their academic future.“ We are very appreciative of El Rancho Supermercado’s generous scholarship donation,” Woodrow said. “The scholarships will provide an incredible opportunity for someone who might not have otherwise considered college an option, giving them the ability to further their education. We are excited to work with El Rancho’s team and welcome their community support.” Details of the application process is being finalized and will be announced shortly. The Dallas-based supermarket chose Liberal for the site of its first store in Kansas and has already shown strong community support with giveaways including backpacks and school supplies.
